The Musical Box

A Trick Of The Tail - Il Tour dei Musical Box ha fatto tappa l' 08 novembre al Gran Teatro di via Tor Di Quinto a Roma. Autentica macchina del tempo, a riportato indietro di trenta anni un pubblico estasiato e per l'occasione ringiovanito dalla stupefacente performance del gruppo.

Dopo " Foxtrot", "Selling England By The Pound" e "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" e arrivato infatti il momento di un'altro grande tour , quello di " A Trick Of The Tail" .

Lo show è stato una "standing ovation" dei tanti fans dei Genesis giunti a Roma.

La band canadese è riuscita a stupire ancora una volta per aver ricreato in maniera perfetta, musiche, coreografie, effetti speciali e luci per uno spettacolo indimenticabile.

La scaletta riproposta naturalmente è stata la stessa del tour dei Genesis del 1976.

La "Scena di Canterbury" (o Canterbury Sound) è uno dei capitoli più affascinanti e "cerebrali" della storia del rock. Non era una vera scuola con mura e banchi, ma un circolo di musicisti geniali e stravaganti che hanno mescolato psichedelia, jazz e umorismo tipicamente inglese.

Viaggio nel Canterbury Sound: Dove il Jazz incontra la Fantasia

Se esistesse un luogo geografico dove la precisione del jazz e l'anarchia della psichedelia si stringono la mano davanti a una tazza di tè, quel luogo sarebbe la Canterbury degli anni '60 e '70. La Scena di Canterbury non è stata solo un genere musicale, ma un’attitudine: una miscela esplosiva di virtuosismo tecnico, testi surreali e una libertà compositiva senza precedenti.

Le Origini: The Wilde Flowers

Tutto ebbe inizio con una band seminale chiamata The Wilde Flowers. Fondata a metà anni '60, non pubblicò quasi nulla all'epoca, ma servì da "vivaio" per quasi tutti i protagonisti del movimento. Da qui si diramarono i due rami principali dell'albero genealogico di Canterbury: i Soft Machine e i Caravan.

I Pilastri della Scena

• Soft Machine: I pionieri assoluti. Partiti come paladini della psichedelia londinese (insieme ai Pink Floyd di Syd Barrett), si sono evoluti rapidamente verso un jazz-rock complesso e ipnotico. Figure come Robert Wyatt (batterista dalla voce angelica) e Kevin Ayers hanno dato alla band un'impronta inconfondibile, sospesa tra sperimentazione d'avanguardia e puro genio creativo.

• Caravan: Se i Soft Machine rappresentavano il lato più ostico e jazz, i Caravan incarnavano l'anima melodica e pastorale. Il loro capolavoro, In the Land of Grey and Pink, è l'emblema del suono di Canterbury: ritmi dispari, organi distorti e testi che sembrano usciti da una fiaba per adulti.

• Gong: Fondati da Daevid Allen (ex Soft Machine), i Gong hanno portato la componente spaziale e psichedelica all'estremo. Con la loro "mitologia" fatta di teiere volanti e folletti, hanno creato un ponte tra la scena inglese e quella europea, fondendo space-rock e fusion in modo irripetibile.

Gli Altri Protagonisti

La scena è un fitto sottobosco di collaborazioni. Non si possono dimenticare:

• Hatfield and the North: Un supergruppo che ha perfezionato l'equilibrio tra tecnica jazzistica e ironia britannica.

• Matching Mole: Il progetto di Robert Wyatt dopo l'incidente che lo rese paraplegico, capace di momenti di rara bellezza emotiva.

Perché è importante ancora oggi?

La musica di Canterbury ci insegna che non bisogna aver paura di essere complessi, a patto di non prendersi troppo sul serio. È una musica che sfida l'ascoltatore con tempi dispari e scale insolite, ma lo accoglie sempre con un sorriso sornione.

Curiosità: Molti musicisti di questa scena preferivano l'organo Lowrey o l'Hammond pesantemente distorto (il famoso suono "fuzz"), creando quel timbro caldo e graffiante che è il marchio di fabbrica di quasi ogni disco di Canterbury.
