Il 1971 segna un anno fondamentale per il Progressive Rock, con la creazione di opere che non solo hanno definito il genere, ma che continuiamo ad apprezzare e celebrare anche oggi. Dischi iconici come "Pawn Hearts" dei Van Der Graaf Generator, "Nursery Cryme" dei Genesis, "Tarkus" degli Emerson Lake & Palmer, e "Aqualung" dei Jethro Tull rappresentano solo alcuni esempi di questi capolavori, che rimarranno sempre parte integrante della nostra cultura musicale. Le composizioni di questo periodo si arricchiscono di complessità, grazie all'introduzione di influenze di jazz, musica classica e folk, che hanno contemporaneamente facilitato una maggiore sperimentazione e innovazione sonora. L'approccio vocale si trasforma in un elemento di strumentazione, caratterizzato da artisti pionieristici come Peter Hammill e Peter Gabriel, i quali hanno guidato questa evoluzione. Inoltre, nuovi stili di basso, incarnati da musicisti come Chris Squire, insieme all'innovativa batteria di PhilCollins, hanno aperto la strada a sonorità mai udite prima. Un modo per comprendere la genesi di questo genere potrebbe essere pensato come a un Rock'n Roll rinnovato: rimuovendo la parte "Roll" (ballabile), ma arricchendo la struttura con elementi jazzistici, classici e folk, si ottiene un'armonica sfida che guida il Progressive Rock verso nuove e affascinanti direzioni.
